Lake Simcoe, ON - Malka Rozencwajg

Reminiscing back to a time of my younger years before the 70s.. I recall a summertime resort within a walk of Lake Simcoe intended for urban families. We’d swim several times daily within the bounds of a buoyed section intended for learning swimmers— I neared intermediate the last time attended. I recall attempting to fish from a dock in water too shallow and sand-covered to artificially attempt to create a rudimentary resort beachfront.. to hook anything except an occasional sunfish— Then I’d receive chastisement from my mother for leaving the small catches thrown back into the lake with sore lips upon removing the fish-hooks as others looking-on laughed—

We seldom boated to my disappointment however I recollect a few of the resort-goers kids mothers set-up tea-trollies a friend and I would wander to upon seeing our mothers wearing sunbonnets— always becomingly smiling whilst overlooking the shore during their kids water safety tutorials.. or during afternoon free-swim times—

Some of the other activities in which I participated took shape in the rec-hall equipped with a sizeable stage attached to a drawing-room. I’d practise a baton routine learned in the city to a full house and once ended cast after a reading as Ramses-II to the embarrassment of my mother. The water always drew.. as did the poor fishing and berry picking—
